Foiled Wedding Invitations: All about Gold Foiling

We have to agree that Indian Weddings are incomplete without some gold, bling, glitter and jazz! You might have different measuring meter wrt how much bling you prefer, but I’m sure that you absolutely want some- it can be a subtle hint of shine or a big ball of sparkles! All you wonderful people with Indian cultural background and sensibilities definitely need some gold! We all love that shine in our wedding dresses, jewellery and decor and what not! And for your wedding, you can set the tone right from the very beginning with your wedding invitations. One of the most fabulous ways to add super luxury feel to your wedding invitations is through foiling.

What is a foil?

A foil is an opaque and extremely thin shit of metal which is available in a variety of color options such as gold, silver, rose gold (copper), white, red, green and so on. Holographic foil is also available.

How to incorporate foil in your wedding invitation suite?

You can add a whole lot of dimension to your wedding invitation suite with foiling. Foil also brings with it a lot of shimmer, shine and last but not the least elegance.
Foil printing can be done in two ways.

  1. Flat printing or Digital Foiling is a method in which a layer of foil sticks onto the paper.

  2. Foil Press Printing is another method in which foil is pressed into the paper using metal plates.

Foil printing can be done for text or design or both and I love it when it is combined with other printing methods such as letterpress printing, digital colored printing, blind embossing etc.

Another luxurious way to add element of gold to your wedding invitations is by adding gold leaf to the edges of the paper by hand. This is know as Foil Edging or Gold Leafing the Edges. When you add an elements of foil to your invitation, it instantly makes it look more classic and a treat for the eyes.

Which paper color work best with foiling?

Because foil is opaque, it can be used with almost all of the paper colors. This also gives flexibility to use darker paper colors. Gold foiling on ivory paper, white foil on navy, rose gold foiling on burgundy. The combinations are endless.

I want foiling but with a softer look. What are my options?

You don’t like over-the-top reflecting gold look and are looking for a softer look. If this is you, then you can opt for foils in matte finish which offers a very subtle and timeless look.

What is the cost of foiling?

Foil printing is an expensive printing method because it is more on the luxury side. The pricing depends on how much area is being foiled. You can choose to reduce the foil usage which would save on the costs. For instance, instead of getting the whole text foil printed, you can choose certain text to be foiled. If the design allows, you can also choose fewer elements from the design for foiling. Digital Foiling is less expensive than Foil Press Printing.

I love the idea of metallic shine. Are there any budget alternatives?

If you love this shine that foiling gives, but don’t want to pay for it you can go for UV and Thermographic printing instead. You can also choose Screen Printing in gold metallic ink. This will help to maintain your love for metallic aesthetic at a lesser investment.
